Nigeria edges out Egypt as number one in African rice production

West African economic powerhouse, Nigeria is now Africa’s biggest producers of rice, over-taking Egypt as the leading producer of rice in the continent.

Back in March 2019, it was claimed that Nigeria only produces 4-million tones of rice annually, but RIFAN president, Amino Goronyo dismissed the claims, stating that, Nigeria produces 8-million thanks to the two rice farming seasons the country has.

Egypt used to be on top, producing 4.3 tones per year but suffered a massive decline in the past years allowing Nigeria to rise to the summit with 8 million tonnes out of the Africa average of 14.6 million tonnes of rice annually.
